How to set up a Farming Simulator 25 dedicated server

Farming Simulator 25 has a quirk that catches people out: the dedicated server is not a separate free download, it is part of the game. You need a legitimate copy, and that copy cannot play while the server is running.

What to know before you start

• A game key dedicated to the server. This is what blocks most people: the licence running the server is occupied. If you want to play on your own server, you need two copies of the game, or a host that supplies the server licence.
• A web administration interface. Unlike most games, FS25 is not driven by a configuration file but by a web page served by the server itself.
• Open ports for both the game and the web interface, otherwise the server runs but is neither reachable nor manageable.

What the web interface does

Everything is driven from there: starting and stopping the savegame, picking the map, managing mods, slot count, saves. There is almost nothing to edit by hand, which makes FS25 considerably more approachable than average.

The flip side is that this interface is the only way in: if it is unreachable, you can no longer administer anything, even while the game itself runs perfectly.

The mistakes that keep coming back

• Using the same licence you play on. The server refuses to start, or kicks you out of your own game.
• Forgetting the web interface port. The game is playable, administration is not reachable.
• Adding mods without restarting the savegame. They are only picked up when the save loads.
• Starting a modded map without the map mod. The server quietly loads the default map instead.

Confirming it worked

The web interface shows the real state: loaded map, active mods, connected players. That is more reliable than the launcher, which can display a configuration the server has not reloaded yet.
