Farming Simulator 25 supports a modest player count compared with survival games, and that number is rarely the problem. The load on an FS25 server comes from somewhere else.
What actually loads it
AI vehicles
By far the biggest item. Every machine working automatically is a continuous simulation: path, implement, fill level, collisions. A farm running fifteen machines autonomously costs more than a farm with five players driving themselves.
Productions and livestock
They run permanently, with nobody around. A large career with many production chains and herds carries a baseline load that never drops to zero.
Mods
Script mods, particularly those adding economy or automation, execute every tick. They weigh more than a machinery mod, which only adds content.
The map
Large modded maps with heavy detail and many fields are noticeably heavier than the official ones.
What does not load it
The players themselves, in most cases. A player driving a tractor costs roughly what an AI tractor costs. That is why an eight-player FS25 server can run on far less than an eight-player survival server.
Symptoms of a server running short
- AI vehicles hesitating or stopping for no reason.
- A lag between what one player does and what the others see.
- Autosaves that make the whole game stutter.
None of these is fixed by lowering the slot count: you either reduce automation or move up a tier.
Sizing for the farm you will have
An FS25 career gets heavier over time, and it never gets lighter. The first month is a handful of fields and two tractors; a year in it is a dozen production chains running around the clock and a fleet working on its own. A server chosen for the opening weeks will be the wrong size by the time it matters, and the moment it starts struggling is the moment your group has the most invested in the save.
The practical approach is to start on something modest, watch how the AI vehicles behave as automation grows, and move up when hesitation appears rather than after players have started drifting away.
