How many players a 7 Days to Die server holds

People almost always pick a 7 Days to Die server by slot count. It is the most misleading number here, because the load comes from the world rather than the players.
What actually loads the server
Every modified block, every base and every enemy is a tracked object. A long-played world costs more than any number of players.
Why slot count misleads
Eight players exploring cost less than two who built a trap-filled fortress. The gap shows up nowhere except in performance.
Blood moon is the peak
It is the night the server calculates the most. Size the plan on that moment, not on a quiet Tuesday evening.
World size
A bigger map means more loaded zones. The effect on memory is direct and independent of player count.
Spread across the map
The server keeps zones around players active. A group scattered across four corners costs noticeably more than the same group together.
Abandoned bases
A base still exists when its owner has not played for months. Twenty abandoned bases load exactly as much as twenty used ones.
Signs the server is too small
A gap between the hit and the reaction, blocks appearing late, short pauses during saves.
What helps without changing plan
Clearing abandoned bases, reducing horde size and limiting traps.
Save file size
It grows with the world. If it doubles in a month, the load doubled too, and the file listing shows it immediately.
Growth is continuous
The world never gets smaller. A plan chosen on the first week will be too small by the third month.
How to choose
On three months and on horde night, not on the first evening.
Most of what precedes is a matter of organisation rather than technique: the decisions are made before you start, the backups have to actually run, and the rules are written while nothing has gone wrong yet. Our 7 Days to Die server hosting takes on the part there is no reason to do by hand — automatic backups, mod management and instant setup, along with a panel where settings, files, mods and restarts are handled without ever opening a command line.
