Mods on a 7 Days to Die server
Contents

7 Days to Die mods change the game deeply, and that is exactly why they are the leading cause of a broken server. Both come from the same thing.

Client and server must match

Most mods must be installed on the player side too. One missing mod blocks the connection, and the message does not say so clearly.

Some mods are server-only

Mods that change settings often work without a client side. Prefer those: they ask nothing of the players.

Versions matter

A mod written for an older game version usually stops working after an update. It is the leading cause of a server that will not start.

Add one mod at a time

Ten mods installed together make it impossible to say which one broke the server.

Conflicts

Two mods touching the same thing produce an unpredictable result. Removing half and trying again remains the fastest route.

Removing a mod destroys items

The blocks and items from a removed mod disappear from the world. It is the most common irreversible loss in this game.

Large mod packs

Major content mods effectively create a different game and double the requirements. The plan then has to be chosen again.

Update when nobody is playing

An update mid-evening throws everyone out. Night costs the same and causes far less confusion.

Warn in advance

A short message before changing the list removes half the questions.

A backup before every change

Adding or removing a mod is a change to the world.

Fewer is better

Five chosen mods make a better server than fifty picked at random.

Most of what precedes is a matter of organisation rather than technique: the decisions are made before you start, the backups have to actually run, and the rules are written while nothing has gone wrong yet. Our 7 Days to Die server hosting takes on the part there is no reason to do by hand — automatic backups, mod management and instant setup, along with a panel where settings, files, mods and restarts are handled without ever opening a command line.
