Unturned maps: official, curated and Workshop

The map is the most structural decision on an Unturned server. It sets the pace, the difficulty, and how long your players will have things left to find.
Three categories, not two
Official maps
Shipped with the game, available with no download. They carry one decisive advantage: they cost nothing in connection time, so a curious player is in immediately.
That makes them the sensible default, and the only choice if you want strangers to try the server at all.
Curated maps
Community maps selected and folded in officially. They combine the quality of a carefully built map with the availability of an official one. For many servers, that is the best compromise.
Workshop maps
Everything else, wildly uneven in quality. An excellent Workshop map can define a server's identity, but it imposes a download on every newcomer — and that is exactly where the curious are lost.
What a map costs the server
A large map is not just longer to cross: it holds more items to generate, more vehicles to track and more zombies to simulate. Moving from a small official map to a large custom one shows up directly in the load.
If your server slowed down after a map change, look there before blaming the machine.
Choosing by community
- Public server open to strangers: official or curated. Any forced download loses a share of visitors.
- Closed, loyal community: the Workshop becomes interesting. Players accept the download because they are coming for that server specifically.
- Long-running server: changing the map revives interest but resets progression. Announce it well in advance.
Changing maps without losing a world
Each map has its own save inside the instance. Switching destroys nothing: the old world stays on disk and comes back intact when you return to it.
Our Unturned hosting gives full instance access, so you can keep several worlds and alternate without losing any of them.
