Rust server settings and multipliers

Rust servers divide into vanilla and modded, and the line between them comes down to a handful of settings. They deserve a conscious choice rather than a default.
Vanilla or modded
A vanilla server leaves everything as it is and attracts players who want the original pace. A modded server is faster and more forgiving.
The gather multiplier
This is the central modded setting. Two or three speeds up the early game without erasing the content.
Craft speed
A separate setting governs crafting time. It affects comfort more than balance and is often unfairly overlooked.
Base decay
Decay determines how long an abandoned base stays standing. It is one of the few settings that acts directly on performance.
Day and night length
Night is more dangerous in Rust. A long night makes the server distinctly harsher; a short one makes it friendlier to newcomers.
Loot amounts
What crates contain decides whether exploring is worth it. A server that is too generous is popular for a week and empty the next.
Team size
Capping team members prevents a single group from eventually controlling the entire server.
Publish your settings
Multipliers belong in the description. A player who came for vanilla and lands on a ×10 server leaves the same evening.
Never change mid-cycle
Changing multipliers part-way through always shortchanges someone. Changes belong between cycles.
Write the settings down
Chosen values are kept alongside the backups. An update can overwrite the file with defaults.
Change one thing at a time
If something breaks after several edits, there is no way to tell which one caused it.
Most of what precedes is a matter of organisation rather than technique: the decisions are made before you start, the backups have to actually run, and the rules are written while nothing has gone wrong yet. Our Rust server hosting takes on the part there is no reason to do by hand — automatic backups, map management and instant setup, along with a panel where settings, files, mods and restarts are handled without ever opening a command line.
