How to set up a Rust server

A Rust server starts quickly, but its character is decided before anyone connects. A few choices made carelessly at launch cannot be undone later.
Why a dedicated server
The Rust world lives without players: bases decay, resources return, other people build. None of that exists without a server that stays up.
What you need to start
Server software, open ports and a serious memory allowance. Rust is one of the most demanding games in the genre on that point.
The ports
Game traffic, queries and RCON use different ports. If only one is open, the server appears to run but never shows up in the list.
Map size
Size is chosen at launch and determines how much room there is for bases. A map too large for a small group feels empty and costs for nothing.
The seed
The seed decides the shape of the map. Write it down: without it, the same world cannot be regenerated.
Admins
An admin is declared by platform identifier. Without that, nobody can remove anyone and every incident ends in a restart.
The server name
It is the only thing a player judges in the list. A clear name brings more people than any setting.
The wipe schedule
Rust servers clear the world on a regular cycle. That decision belongs before opening, because it sets the entire rhythm of the server.
The first connection
Before inviting the group, connect yourself. If the map loads and the character appears, the foundation is sound.
The most common mistakes
Closed ports, an oversized map and forgotten admins. Those three cover nearly every first-day problem.
Shut down cleanly
Rust writes the world on shutdown. Killing the process mid-write remains the leading cause of a lost world.
Most of what precedes is a matter of organisation rather than technique: the decisions are made before you start, the backups have to actually run, and the rules are written while nothing has gone wrong yet. Our Rust server hosting takes on the part there is no reason to do by hand — automatic backups, map management and instant setup, along with a panel where settings, files, mods and restarts are handled without ever opening a command line.
