A RedM server is worth exactly what its resources are worth. All the content comes from them, and so do most of the problems.
The framework comes first
The roleplay framework determines how characters, property and jobs work. Changing it later effectively means rebuilding the server.
The start order
Resources start in the order given in the config. A wrong order starts a dependent resource before its base and the error message misleads.
Add one at a time
Ten resources added together make it impossible to say which one brought the server down.
Check the source
A resource from an unknown place can contain something you did not expect. On an RP server that means access to the database and to player data.
Free and paid
A paid resource is not automatically better, but it is usually maintained. An abandoned resource stops working at the first major update.
Plan updates
Updating a resource mid-evening can bring the server down. Night costs the same.
Keep the list clean
After a year the server contains resources nobody remembers adding. Regular pruning is the only remedy.
The logs name the culprit
If the server crashes, the reason is almost always in the log. One read saves hours.
Do not change two things at once
A new resource and a new setting together make diagnosis impossible.
Keep your own edits separate
If you modify a third-party resource, the change disappears at the next update. Keeping edits separate is the only way to put them back.
Test before, not after
A second smaller server with the same resources costs little and saves a great deal.
Most of what precedes is a matter of organisation rather than technique: the decisions are made before you start, the backups have to actually run, and the rules are written while nothing has gone wrong yet.
