How to set up an ARK: Survival Ascended server

ARK: Survival Ascended asks considerably more than the original ARK. The engine changed, and so did the memory footprint — that is the point that surprises people when choosing a plan.

What changed from Survival Evolved

Moving to a new engine raised both memory and compute requirements. A plan that carried an Evolved server will not necessarily carry the same group on Ascended.

Why a dedicated server

The ARK world lives without players: tamed creatures grow, crops ripen, structures decay. A session hosted from the game does none of that.

What you need to start

Server software, open ports and a generous memory allowance. The requirement grows every week and never comes back down.

The ports

Game traffic, queries and RCON use separate ports. If only one is open, the server appears to work but stays missing from the list.

Choosing a map

Available maps differ in size and demand. A bigger map means more loaded zones and therefore more memory, regardless of player count.

Two configuration files

ARK splits its settings across two files, and that is the most confusing part of the install. The same value can appear in both, and only one applies.

The multipliers

Taming, experience and harvesting are set before opening. Changing them later means part of the group paid more for the same work.

The admin password

Without it, nothing can be done from inside the game. Set it at the start, or every incident forces a restart.

Structure decay

The server decides how long an unmaintained structure survives. Without it the map fills with abandoned bases within months.

The first connection

Before inviting the group, connect yourself. If the map loads and the character appears, the foundation is sound.

Common mistakes

Closed ports, a setting placed in the wrong file and too little memory. Those three cover nearly every first-day problem.

Shut down cleanly

ARK writes the world on shutdown. Killing the process mid-write remains the leading cause of a lost world.
