On Ascended, mods download automatically through a dedicated catalogue. That is simpler than before, and it moves the problems rather than removing them.
Downloads are automatic
The server states what is needed and the client fetches it. Players install nothing by hand, which remains the biggest advantage of the arrangement.
Load order matters
Mods load in the order given. A wrong order lets one mod overwrite another and the result becomes unpredictable.
Updates arrive unannounced
A mod can update at any time and the server stops starting. If something breaks with no change from you, that is the first place to look.
Add one mod at a time
Ten mods added together make it impossible to say which one brought the server down. One at a time is only slower on the first evening.
Removing a mod destroys items
The structures and creatures from a removed mod disappear. It is the most common irreversible loss on ARK.
Map mods are a separate case
A new map is a new world. That is not a settings change but building a server from scratch.
Large mods change the equation
A major content mod can double the memory requirement. The plan then has to be chosen again.
Conflicts
Two mods touching the same thing produce an unpredictable result. The fastest route is to remove half and try again.
Update when nobody is playing
An update mid-evening throws everyone out with no explanation. Night costs the same.
Warn the group
Players tolerate downtime well when they know the reason, and very badly when they do not.
A backup before every change
Changing the mod list is a change to the world. The copy taken beforehand is the only thing separating an attempt from a loss.
Fewer is better
Five chosen mods make a better server than fifty picked at random. A long list lengthens connections and multiplies conflicts.
Most of what precedes is a matter of organisation rather than technique: the decisions are made before you start, the backups have to actually run, and the rules are written while nothing has gone wrong yet.
