On an Internet-facing server, the bottleneck often lies at the kernel entry point. XDP (eXpress Data Path), powered by eBPF, processes packets as close as possible to the network driver, before the TCP/IP stack. The result: lower latency, fewer interrupts, and the ability to filter/count/redirect traffic directly at the driver level. For hosting games, APIs, or high-traffic websites, this is a real way to absorb spikes and mitigate L3/L4 attacks.Requirements and quick checks
- Recent kernel (5.x+ recommended) with eBPF/XDP enabled (CONFIG_BPF, CONFIG_XDP_SOCKETS, etc.).
- Tools:

eth0on a VPS). - Non-root sudo user and firewall in place (UFW/Firewalld) for flows not handled by XDP.
Install the main tools

Attach an XDP program (minimal example)
The idea: load a BPF object and attach it to an interface. Use cases: filtering, counting, rate limiting
- Early filtering: drop risky IP/ports before reaching the network stack.
- Metrics counting: use BPF maps to track PPS, top IPs, packet types.
- Rate limiting: apply a simple token bucket per source IP directly in XDP.
- Redirection: forward to dedicated queues (RSS) for parallel processing.
Basic denylist/allowlist policy
Use two BPF maps: an allowlist and a denylist. Observability and debugging

Security best practices
- Least privilege: load programs from trusted paths, control access to BPF sockets.
- CI/CD: version and sign your
.oobjects, test in staging. - Rollback plan: keep a detach command ready and, ideally, out-of-band access.
- Kernel compatibility: check helpers and structures across versions.
Performance tuning
To really speed up VPS network, combine XDP with:- RSS/multiple queues with proper irqbalance tuning.
- Packet segmentation (GRO/GSO) tuned for your workload.
- CPU pinning for critical threads and fewer memory copies.
- Continuous monitoring (PPS, p95/p99 latency) to validate gains.
