Valheim dedicated server vs hosting from the game

Valheim gives you two ways to play together, and they have almost nothing in common. One player can open their world from inside the game, or you can run a dedicated server that keeps the world alive on its own. This is not a comfort choice — it changes what the game is.

What in-game hosting costs you

When a player hosts, the world only exists while they are connected. Three consequences, all of which people discover at the worst moment:

• Nobody plays without the host. If the friend who hosts is working tonight, the world does not exist tonight.
• Time stops. Kilns, smelters and crops only advance during sessions. A flax field planted before logging off is in exactly the same state when you come back.
• The host's machine carries everything. It runs the game and simulates the world for everyone. They are the first to watch their frame rate collapse when a troll turns up.

What a dedicated server gives you

The world runs whether or not anyone is connected. Smelters finish overnight, crops grow, and anyone can join at any hour without waiting for a specific person.

Two less obvious gains matter more over time:

• Your save stops depending on one personal hard drive. A hundred-hour Valheim world disappearing with a PC happens, and there is no recovering from it.
• Performance stops depending on who hosts. The simulation always runs on the same machine with the same resources.

What a dedicated server needs

• A machine that stays up, with good single-core clock speed — Valheim leans on one core, so frequency matters more than core count.
• Memory, which grows with how much of the world has been explored and built, not with player count.
• Two consecutive UDP ports.
• A password of at least five characters that is not contained in the server name — the server refuses to start otherwise.

Self-hosting or renting

Running it at home is possible and looks free. The real price shows up elsewhere: the machine has to stay on, the connection has to hold, your home IP is exposed to players, and any power cut ends everyone's session.

When to switch

Two signs are reliable. First, your group starts complaining they cannot play without one specific person. Second, you start long production chains — coal, flax, carrots — and notice they never advance between sessions. From then on, in-game hosting slows you down more than it simplifies anything.
