PvP and difficulty on a Terraria server

Difficulty and PvP are the two settings that decide which group stays on a Terraria server. Both are chosen before you start.
Classic, expert, master
The three levels differ in enemy strength and loot. Master mode is harsh even for an experienced player.
Difficulty cannot be changed later
The choice is made when the world is created. If the group finds it too hard after a month, that means a new world, not a new setting.
Character mode is separate
Softcore, mediumcore and hardcore determine what a player loses on death. It is an individual choice, but the server rules should state the expectation.
PvP is voluntary
On Terraria each player enables PvP themselves. Conflict is therefore an agreement rather than a server setting.
Teams
Players pick a team colour, which determines who can attack whom. Teams make PvP organised and cut misunderstandings sharply.
An arena is worth building
An agreed PvP area keeps fights away from the living quarters. Without it, every duel ends with someone's house in ruins.
Loss rules
In mediumcore items drop. On a PvP server that means the loser can end up with no equipment: agree on that beforehand.
Write the rules down
A player behaves differently when they know what is allowed. A server without written rules generates the most conflict.
Do not change mid-run
Allowing PvP on a server that started peaceful is the fastest way to lose the group.
Protect the builds
Most long-lived servers keep the living area untouchable and only allow fighting in agreed places.
Talk before, not after
Most Terraria conflicts come from an unspoken disagreement. One conversation at the start saves many evenings.
Most of what precedes is a matter of organisation rather than technique: the decisions are made before you start, the backups have to actually run, and the rules are written while nothing has gone wrong yet. Our Terraria server hosting takes on the part there is no reason to do by hand — automatic backups, tModLoader support and instant setup, along with a panel where settings, files, mods and restarts are handled without ever opening a command line.
